Reborn dolls began in the 1990's. Reborn dolls are the next best thing from porcelain to vinyl.
The process of creating a reborn doll is refered to as reborning, and the artists who create these dolls are
called reborners. Reborning involved numerous time consuming steps Also there is quite an invenstment in
reborning. Most consumers either purchase a reborn doll to replace a child that they cannot have, or that
may have been lost. They use these dolls as a substitute for children and they become emotionally attatched
to the doll as if it were thier own child. Another use for reborn dolls is for therapy, such as for the elderly
for a sense of warmth as if they are raising another child. Aside from that, the other consumers for a reborn
doll are collectors or doll enthusiasts.
There is a great amount of time devoted to creating each and every reborn doll. A few of the steps taken are,
first there is several layers of painting required to get the realistic features such as veins and other markings
on the babies skin. Another step when all of the painting is completed is to root hair into the dolls head, also
on steps including the head would be to insert glass eyes to give the dolls the realistic feeling of them looking
at you, and to add eyelashes to increase the realistic look of the doll itself.
